Climb In The Back Window Exhibition

I've been told they'll be showing the film of Mark Gonzales skating at The Stadtisches Mueseum in Germany as well.

Crystal Is The New Wolf Exhibition

For their 18th exhibition Recoat are bringing together two artists, Will Barras and Rue Five. The pair are quite different, Barras is a 37 year-old London based designer who started out creating record sleeves and bmx graphics while Rue Five is a 23 year-old Stirling based artist whose roots lie in graffiti art, yet the work they are producing now has much in common and compliments each other well.
The pair move in similar circles, meeting up at various exhibitions over the years, but after bumping into each other again after being invited to Banksy’s Cans II Festival last year, and due to their mutual appreciation, they decided they needed to work together, hence “Crystal is the New Wolf”.
When the unlikely pair approached Recoat to curate their first exhibition together, they were delighted,
“Will and Jules are both so well known within this genre, our audience will love to see them together for the first time. They both have lovely mark making skills and the work carries layered narrative, exploring themes like nostalgia, relationships, loneliness and culture. We’re really excited about showing this interesting exhibition from such an unusual yet in-tune partnership.”
The pair are creating a series of drawings, both of their own work and collaborations and creating a large scale art piece in the space.

Derm Exhibition: Focal Range

Focal Range is a solo exhibition by Edinburgh-based graphic artist Derm, highlighting the prevalence of CCTV cameras in the urban environment. Using a variety of media including photography, spraypaint and screen-printing.

There are 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain today one for every fourteen people.
In any one day you could appear up to 300 times on CCTV.
Focal Range looks back at those looking at us.

MoMA premiered this awesome video for Department of Eagles 'No One Does It Like You' recently. I'll admit I've never really been a huge fan of Marcel Dzama but this is a really great interpretation of his drawings and for no apparent reason the combination of them and the song make me think of The Wizard Of Oz. Which is a good thing.

On a D.O.E. side note the new Grizzly Bear album Veckatimest comes out in May.

Boy meets girl, girl ties boy to donkey…
A major new collection of distinctive drawings and paintings by Kirsty Whiten depict intimate struggles as boys are taken hostage, cared for, teased and broken in like horses.
They play and fight in costumes constructed from materials found in their homes; weapons from the kitchen, riding gear from addidas, hair -pieces, scarves and turbans made from towels and t shirts. Adults using childlike play to act out the best and worst of their dependency and desire.
The fierce and delicate images explore sexuality, control and truce, the tenderness of surrender - the roles fought over and claimed by modern men and women.

I had a chance to see the work at a preview exhibition in Edinburgh organised by Recoat recently and had a super good time and drank some super yummy whiskey. The 'Horse-breaker' series of drawings really needs to be seen up close so if your in London make your way over too Stolenspace and check them out.

CONCRETE SHADOWS: DISCUSSION EVENT

The event will begin at 4pm, with a break between presentations for soup and beer.

Chaired by Sarah Lowndes and featuring presentations by Kate Davis and Ines Schaber this event is designed to open up and explore issues behind our current exhibition Concrete Shadows and to contribute to the further development of the project. Themes running through the project include relationships between women artists of different generations, legacies of feminist art and how biographies/artworks are defined through art history. We invite everyone attending to participate in response to two artist presentations: Kate Davis ’We Are Not Historical Documents!’ and Ines Schaber ‘Friendship/Production - A Reading Through Nancy Holt’s Archive’.

This is Kate Davis' first talk about her own practice in Scotland for some time. She will give an overview of recent work, which has made reference to, and connections with, artists such as Faith Wilding, Barbara Kruger, Franz Gertsch, Yvonne Rainer, Käthe Kollwitz, Lucie Rie and Carolee Schneemann. In her first visit to Scotland, Ines Schaber presents a talk about her recent trip with Nancy Holt in Arizona and New Mexico as part of a research project for a new book on Holt by the University of California Press due for publication in 2009. She will present a reading through Holt's archive on American land art, and looks at the impact of friendships on her work.

After a decade Stirlings only contempory art space closed its almost secret, slightly hidden doors in the old Crawford Arcade for the last time on the 31st of December.
But don't worry its only gone and moved up the hill to The Tolbooth, Stirlings super-nice all round contempory arts and music venue. It should be re-launched sometime this summer with better facilities, advertising and general oh look its right there. That was easy to find feelings (and theres a bar upstairs). Oh what fun and merryment shall be had.

Which has been collated from collaborative and individual works of theirs which were exhibited for the first time in the 'Ink Advance' show at the Green-Wood Gallery in Melbourne, Australia where drawings, interactive instalations and publications were collected after being sent between Melbourne, Vienna, Edinburgh, Vancouver and Berlin.

Adam & Joe

Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish are top banana. If you're not familiar with them, they're most famous for a television programme called "The Adam & Joe Show" broadcast on Channel 4 in the late 90s. The show was a mix of home-made nonsense featuring the chaps in their bedroom with a lot of ideas and some toys. See!:

There are tons of other clips from the show on YouTube, so have a hunt about. Adam has been uploading a lot of his personal ones (including the new stuff he did with Radiohead) to his blog and to his YouTube channel. Joe often writes good stuff on his MySpace blog.

Something I feel often gets overlooked is how just dang funny they are, regardless of the toys and the 'studenty bollocks' skits. They're a pair of polite, well educated and perhaps slightly posh dudes who can make chatting about trivial rubbish entertaining without ever falling into horrible internetty-humour or rubbish Family Guy style wackiness. They also have crazy amounts of pop culture knowledge (Joe in particular seems to have seen every horror film ever made) and damn good taste. They're brills!

Recently Adam and Joe have been floating about radio-land, starting out on XFM and now appearing on BBC 6 Music. Their show (HERE) goes out on Saturday morning and can be listened to live on the 6 Music site and heard for the whole week using the listen again feature. Radio suits them well as they're given space to talk about whatever they want and have even started trying to out-sing each other on their 'Song Wars' feature. They even write their own jingles and play good music.

PODCASTS!
Best of all is their podcasts. These are a mixture of highlights from their radio show as well as some new golden nuggets recorded especially for the downloads. The archive of their XFM stuff is available HERE and is in my opinion the best podcast out there. It's some of their funniest work and manages to be perhaps the only Gervais beater.

This week also sees the launch of their new BBC podcast and is the reason I am writing these words. Go and listen to it. You can download it for free HERE. There is also talk of a beefed up, new material, sweary version appearing sometime soon as well. There you go. Boy, I hope you like Adam & Joe.

Holga vs. Hasselblad. Yum. Will and Dave make their footprint on Philadelphia both in the gallery and at the pub.

Holga: 700 Club, Will and Dave having a blast (they discovered this bar on their own cuz they played Soccer/Football on the TV, but little did they know they have house parties at night!)

Hasselblad: Amble Gallery, Witch Wagon installation, this was the very end of the roll so it got cut off but I still really like it.

Eleanor Davies

I met Eleanor Davies when i went to this years SPX apart from drawing really neat comics like the one above (Fluke Antholgy #6). She runs Little House Comics with her man Drew and makes really sweet zines and mini comics about how she feels. I picked up "How We Sleep" a small 3" x 3" hand bound book with drawings of her and Drew sleeping in thier underwear... with some cats, and she penned a drawing of a little girl curled up with a cat thinking Rue which made me smile.

Earlier this summer she was the cover feature of Mome Vol. 8 and took part in the "Panellists" show at Giant Robot LA. Watch out for her.

"We Can Work It Out"

"We Can Work It Out." is a group show at one of the new exhibition spaces in The Green Room in Edinburgh.It opened last Friday the 16th to what seemed to me to be a full house and good reviews.Along side myself other exhibitors include Acorn, Jet-Pac, Klingatron, Iain Laurie, Matt Pattinson, Roule, Sole, Amy Whiten. Fellow Tell Tale collaborators Spie One, David Galletly, Carrie McGinn and Elph (who sort of curated the show in his own last minute kind of way).

"The Helvetica 50 Show" is on upstairs in the other exhibition space. Both will be running through the month and are well worth checking out if your in the area.

Moomin The Comic

The first two volumes of the Moomin collection published by Drawn & Quarterly are out. Each contains a bunch of the English-language Moomin comics by Tove Jansson first published in the 1950s. Here's a full page from book 1, where Moomintroll and his adopted brother, Sniff (who's a greedy bugger), try to deal with a bunch of unwanted guests:

As an 80s child, my first introduction to The Moomins was through the Japanese-Finnish cartoon that aired in the early 90s. The series is apparently not so faithful to the original books and unpopular amongst die-hard Moonin fans. As a kid I thought it was really cool and even after being mangled by TV, the world and characters still seemed really interesting and well developed.

The comic is straight-up fantastic though. It's playful, beautiful, tragic and fairly dark. The characters are all genius especially Moomintroll. He makes a great lead. As the blurb on the back says, he's got something of the Charlie Brown in him. When's that ever been a bad thing? Never that's when. He's totally all over the shop, a coward one minute, a hero the next. Always crying and shouting and sulking and laughing.

I don't think Schultz ever had Charlie Brown get so depressed as to be suicidal though. Have a click about where you can. Buy some books and stuff. There are some great clips from the spooky fuzzy-felt 70s animated series hovering around online. Infact, I'm sure you can get it on DVD.

Tony Hawk "Mctwist" in Livingston bowl

This is three posts in a row from me on Wanderlust. Someone else have a go why don't yeez.You can surely only take so much of me babbling on aboot keek.

This is footage of the legendary Bones brigade(including a very young Tony Hawk, white helmet, long hair) shredding it up in Livingston during a tour in the early eighties. Worth watching to the end where Hawk pulls off a "Mctwist" for the entertainment of all the Livi punters.

I would suggest that Tony Hawk is the most famous athlete ever to do his thing at a sporting event in Livingston.
The closest that I can think of to that was probably when Sturm Graz played Livingston F.C. in the UEFA cup in 2002. And who can remember any of the players that were on show that night?

Got an opening this Thursday in Glasgow folks.

This pic is how my first canvas looked after the first stroke of paint which I applied two months ago. I've produced six in total. Don't see the point in uploading the finished works though as then you won't have to come all the way to Glasgow to see them. Which will of course mean that I will have shot my self in the foot(Not literaly of course, That would be stupid. Would mean I'd have to go to the hospital and the doctor would be like "why'd you shoot yourself in the foot?" and I'd be like "because I let people see my paintings too early." Then he'd retort, "Eh? What? How? Where's the connection between doing that and blowing a hole in your own foot!!!" Then I'd say "QUIT WITH THE QUESTIONS MAN!! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M STRESSED? YOU TRY PUTTING AN EXHIBITION TOGETHER IN TWO MONTHS AND SEE HOW CLEAR THINKING YOU BECOME ASSHOLE!!"

This is a bit of a crosspost from my blog but it features work from some Telltale folks so what the heck: Recoat in Glasgow are holding their 3rd show - the Rock-Bottom Basement Bonanza this week.

Every piece in the show is priced £40 or less, hence the rock-bottomness of the title. There will be work by around 20 Scottish artists, including Elph, Gregor and myself, so that's some opportunity to get your dirty wee paws on a bargain. I've made a little set of 4 snack drawings for them, including the Jammie Dodger above.

The exhibition runs through October, the opening bash is on Friday 28th September from 7-10pm and is sponsored by anCnoc whiskey, whatever that is. The gallery is next door to the Woodside Social, near the Kelvinbridge underground in Glasgow. Come along.

The trolley was a bright idea i had on the second trip although the wheel lock was on so i dragged it backwards all the way home.

The Changing Room is ten today and to celebrate tonight the 24th of august we shall have a party with free beer, cocktails, cake and music.There will be a live set from The Impudels i think it is though i may be wrong and a DJ set by Amy Marletta who also designed one of a set of 4 limited edition t-shirts along with myself David Galletly and Rob Churm of Park Attack, they will be on sale tonight for a measly tenner so come down and buy them or just come down and have a dance.

for those who saw the sad remains of Love Park when you came to Philly, I told you that they were building a new park that will not replace it, but make the skateboarding community much happier. Philly lost millions of dollars in tourism when they remodeled Love Park, a real mistake. So, they we allotted some land to build on and are still raising money. I took a gander at the place yesterday and thought it was interesting. For those who don't care, whatever, just thought I'd post for fun. :D

I have a show at The Changing Room in Stirling, which I start painting tomorrow, just incase anyones wondering what Im up too. If your in the area pop by say hello and make sure I’m hard at work.

It will run from June 21 - August 11

but don't worry the boozefest known as an opening isn't until July 5, so you should all put it in your diary and have no excuse for not being there.
Anyway I had better go get these flyers printed and start doing some work.

I just got my film developed. I wish I took more negs this past show and I still need to scan all the polaroids that I love so much. I think Tell Tale has transformed my life (not to be cheeserific). Thank you folks.

Look at these fun guys. No one enjoys the Chinatown bus experience more than them. Actually this ride was pretty tame compared to what I've seen in the past. Lucky them. However, next time I go to New York I hope to go for a specific reason, that city is too big for my liking.

The day of the opening, two and half days of work finished just in time for visitors and booze. Everyone pulled there weight and then some, including our Canadian friend Jane who came down early to help hang the work.

Unfortunately Dist's work didn't make it in time for the opening night but according to the post office it's not lost, it's somewhere in America.

So the rest of artists arrived yesterday, late. We spent most of today shopping for bits and bobs and doodads, although we spent the evening hanging boards on both sides of the gallery and painting them. They'll need another coat in the morning.

I finished these Wanderer's around 5.00 am this morning, then had a wee snooze and got up early to get ready for the other artists to arrive.

The fog made them miss there connecting flight and now there stuck overnight in France. they have to come to Philly via Atlanta which means one less day in the gallery eek.

Maybe it's all just a cover up for them getting thrown off the plane for being drunk and lobbing yoghurt at the cabin crew.

I like this bill poster, even though me and Concetta argued about it a wee bit and the people at kinkos were idiots. They couldn't print it off they didn't know what a tiff was and they only had internet explorer they didnae even have a photo program. We tried to portray everyones styles with there names and i hope it worked.

Having now realised that I have officially lost a piece in the post that took me around 120hrs to ink, I have sent more work that I managed to salvage from work for another show.

Flyer

This is the main flyer, I'll be honest I spent a lot less time working on this than both me and Concetta spent working on the bill poster (although i did use some of the same elements). It had to be finished quickly so that it could be printed and distributed, we propably have 1500 left.

We couldn't figure out how to get all the information and an image for everybody on to one flyer without it looking shite. so decided to limit the illustrations to who would be making the trip for the show (It's maybe why i did the e-flyers).

So heres all the finished e-flyers for each individual artist.
These were pretty quick and easy to do as I'd already finished the main flyer and these were the same overall layout, just slightly personalised. I tried to match the splats of colour to each artist by either what i knew to be there favourite or by the colour I've seen them use most often (except with Spieone who sent me his image in full colour with a background so i just used that).
I was kinda' worried at first about fucking around with other peoples images particularly Carrie's photo cos' I know what you photo people can be like, but it was fun anyway.

P.S: Dist and Elph put the characters into thier own flyers.
